The Mumm 30 Story: A Racing Icon

The Mumm 30 (later known as the Farr 30) was born in 1995, a brainchild of the legendary Farr Yacht Design studio, founded by New Zealander Bruce Farr. Farr’s firm is world-renowned for designing a multitude of winning race yachts, from America’s Cup contenders to Volvo Ocean Race champions. His vision for the Mumm 30 was to create a light, fast, and simple one-design racer that was also economical and easy to sail.

To ensure consistent performance and strict one-design standards, the Mumm 30 was built under license by several esteemed boatyards worldwide, including Beneteau (France), Carroll Marine and Waterline Systems (USA), dk Yachts (Malaysia), McDell Marine (New Zealand), and Ovington Boats (UK), with Ovington alone building over 120 of the class.

Design Overview: Built for Victory

The Mumm 30’s design is all about performance and straightforward racing. Its lightweight hull and deck are typically constructed from an E-glass and balsa sandwich, often using vacuum-bagged epoxy for optimal strength and minimal weight.

Key design features include:

  • Fractional Sloop Rig: A 9/10 fractional sloop rig with a keel-stepped carbon fibre mast and swept spreaders eliminates the need for running backstays, simplifying handling for a smaller crew.
  • Non-Overlapping Jibs: This forward-thinking choice allowed for smaller, lighter winches and quicker sail changes, enhancing efficiency.
  • High Righting Moment Keel: A deep fin keel with a large lead bulb provides exceptional stability, allowing the boat to carry full sail upwind without needing excessive crew weight on the rail.
  • Responsive Control: A large, internally mounted spade rudder with a tiller offers superb balance and precise control, giving the boat the feel of a dinghy with the stability of a keelboat.
  • Versatile Downwind Options: The design accommodates both symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers, offering tactical flexibility.
  • Minimalist Interior: While primarily a racer, it includes basic sleeping accommodation, making it capable of distance racing.

The Mumm 30’s innovative design, featuring a high-performance carbon rig, elegant hull, slender keel, and functional deck, has significantly influenced subsequent one-design race boats.
