The Nautitech range of Sail and Power Catamarans from Rochefort, France have at long last graced our South African shores and for the first time will be available for sale locally through Boat Brokers (Pty) Ltd.

In the sailing range there is a choice between a 40 and a 44 footer. Both sizes can be ordered in either a 3 cabin owners version or a 4 cabin.

The quoted base price is for the standard 3 cabin / 2 heads "Owners version". The vessels are available in various configurations. Please let me know if you would like me to send you the brochures, specifications & options.

My initial dockside impression is that of a sleek well proportioned vessel with modern lines. In part this has do with the solid bimini being a continuous extension of the saloon roof which is most pleasing to the eye. Once onboard moving through from the saloon to the aft deck I had the sense that one is in a modern open plan apartment that incorporates a wonderful patio. And I may add a view to die for. The excellent ergonomics combined with the extra usable space is something to behold. The finish and attention to detail is world class. Having been nominated for the European boat of the year for 2023 certainly adds testimony to this.

The galley and saloon are more compact than the dated designs we are more familiar with. Considering for a moment that incorporated into the aft deck design are drop sheets that fully enclose the area, one can be perfectly protected from the elements if so required. I tip my hat to the designers as they have outdone themselves with the utilisation of the available bridge deck space.

Moving below decks one has the choice of either the 3 cabin owners version or the 4 cabin layout. The owners version has her entire Port hull dedicated to the master. In the bow one has a spacious and beautifully appointed heads. Amidships there is a desk and large full-length hanging closet. Aft we find a large double berth at a comfortable height with expansive views through the window. The starboard hull is equally well appointed with double berths in the bow and stern with two walk past midships heads.

Judging by the yard supplied performance table and polar plot she is certainly no slouch through the water and if she handles anything like the Open 40 I sailed she should be a joy to sail. The standard sail plan includes a self tacking jib and powerful fat top main. I would include a code zero on a soft luff furling unit as part of my order as this will allow her to be sailed very efficiently on most points of sail and wind conditions with precious little effort.

Having a dual helm position one can choose ones preferred side to helm from. Those of us that have spent time sailing cruising catamarans will know that once out in open water most of the helming is done by the autopilot which can be controlled remotely. With this in mind, from a design perspective having the helms outbound frees up a significant amount of quality space on the aft deck. All in all, this vessel will be a tough act to top.
